Zwaarbevochten terugkomst voor Enschede Broncos

Zondag 19 maart waren de Utrecht Dominators op bezoek in het regenachtige Enschede. De Dominators wonnen de coin toss en kozen voor de bal. Na de aftrap had de Enschedese defense moeite met het stoppen van de enorm fysieke running game van Utrecht. De Broncos konden de Dominators ternauwernood in de redzone tot stoppen dwingen. Een gemiste Utrechtse fieldgoal
beëindigde de eerste drive. De Enschedese offensive drive begon hierdoor diep vanuit eigen gebied. Na enkele plays wisten de Broncos door te stoten naar de helft van Utrecht, maar de drive kwam tot een abrupt einde door een slecht gegooide pass van quarterback Tom Wolterink. Een Utrechtse verdediger wist de bal met een acrobatische beweging te onderscheppen, waarna de Broncos defense weer het veld werd opgestuurd.
In de tweede Utrechtse offensive drive kwamen de Dominators wederom dichtbij de Broncos endzone. Ook ditmaal kwam dit niet tot een score en had de Enschedese offense aanmerkelijk moeite om haar ritme te vinden na overname van balbezit. De eerste helft stond bijna volledig in het teken van sterk defensief werk van beide ploegen, totdat Utrecht vlak voor rust met een knappe inside run een touchdown wist te scoren. De two-point conversion mislukte, waarmee er een 0-6 score op het bord stond tijdens de halftime.

Bij Enschede zat de schrik er goed in. Tijdens de rustpauze heerste er een sfeer van teleurstelling. De Dominators waren in de eerste helft eenvoudigweg sterker dan de Broncos. Om een thuisnederlaag te voorkomen, zouden de Broncos structureel beter moeten spelen in de tweede helft. Tijdens die tweede helft was de spanning voelbaar. Dit bleek ook uit het aantal personal fouls dat door beide teams werd begaan. De normaal zo bevriende ploegen lieten merken dat ze niet zonder slag of stoot ten onder wilden gaan, waardoor er enkele kleine opstootjes en gemene woordenwisselingen op het veld waren.
In de tweede helft begon de defense van Enschede meer grip op de zaak te krijgen. Dit resulteerde in een betere uitgangspositie voor de Broncos offense, die met een fake handoff de Utrechtse verdediging op het verkeerde been wist te zetten. Tom Wolterink wist daardoor met een 55 yard quarterback keeper de eerste punten voor Enschede op het bord te zetten. Ook voor de Broncos mislukte de two-point conversion, waardoor de stand voorlopig 6-6 was.
Deze eerste touchdown gaf de Enschedese defensieve formatie nieuwe energie. Een fumble recovery bracht het balbezit terug bij de Broncos. En met een minuut of 4 op de klok, kroop de ploeg uit Enschede gestaag richting de Utrechtse endzone. Uiteindelijk was het runningback Hensley Sanchez die met een snelle outside run de endzone inliep. Ook de derde two-point conversion van de dag was een mislukking. In de laatste minuten van de wedstrijd konden de Dominators de wedstrijd niet meer naar zich toetrekken.

De ongeveer 50 toeschouwers die zondag het gure lenteweer wisten te trotseren, waren getuige van spannende wedstrijd waarin weinig punten werden gescoord. Het was een harde pot die bij vlagen gemeen en verbitterd werd gestreden. De spelregels van het American Football laten namelijk ruimte voor fysiek contact dat in de context van het spel niet altijd noodzakelijk is. Zowel de Broncos als de Dominators maakten hier dankbaar gebruik van door elkaar regelmatig het leven zuur te maken met blind-sides en onverwachte downfield blocks. Wat onze mooie sport dan typeert is dat we na deze veldslag elkaar een hand geven en zeggen: “We zijn nog steeds broeders hè?” – “Ja, dat zijn we.”

Tough comeback for Enschede Broncos

On Sunday March 19th the Utrecht Dominators travelled to a rainy Enschede for a game of American Football. The Dominators won the coin toss and chose to receive the ball. After the kickoff, the Enschede defense was struggling to cope with the very physical Utrecht running game. The Broncos only just managed to put a halt to the Dominators march downfield. Fortunately, a missed Utrecht field goal ended the first drive. This however meant that the Enschede offensive drive started deep inside their own territory.
After several plays the Broncos managed to progress beyond the 50-yard line, but the drive ended abruptly after a badly thrown pass by quarterback Tom Wolterink. With a spectacular catch a Utrecht defender intercepted the ball and forced the Broncos to send their defense back out onto the field.
In the second Utrecht offensive drive the Dominators again came close to the Broncos end zone, but just like their previous attempt, they failed to capitalize on their progress and couldn’t put points on the board.
After turning over the ball, the Broncos offense couldn’t find their rhythm either. The first half of the game was dominated by strong defensive work from both teams, until Utrecht broke the monotony by scoring a touchdown on a powerful inside run. The two-point conversion failed, resulting in a 0-6 score when the game went into half time.

Being down 0-6 at the half wasn’t how Enschede had planned this game to unfold. The Dominators were simply the better team in the first half and to turn the momentum around, the Broncos had to significantly improve on both sides of the ball. The tension was high during the second half and it showed in the number of personal fouls that were committed by both teams. Neither team was willing to go down without a fight, which lead to heated arguments and some small scuffles.
The Enschede defense gained a better grip in the second half of the game and this way they provided great field position for the Broncos offense, which managed to trick the Utrecht defense on a fake handoff. QB Tom Wolterink used an elaborate ruse to optimal effect and ran for a 55-yard TD to tie the game at 6-6. The ensuing two-point conversion, alas, was missed.
This Broncos touchdown gave the Enschede defense renewed energy. A fumble recovery subsequently allowed the Broncos to send their offense back onto the field and with around four minutes of time remaining, the team from Enschede efficiently marched down the field, with running back Hensley Sanchez scoring a touchdown on a swift outside run into the end zone. Just like the previous two attempts, the third two-point conversion attempt of the day failed, resulting in a 12-6 score. With little time remaining, the Dominators couldn’t regain control of the game, giving up possession around the two minute warning. The Broncos ended the game in victory formation, taking a knee to not take any unnecessary risks.

The approximately 50 fans in attendance had to endure cold and stormy March weather, but they were treated to an exciting defensive match. It was a tough game which at times drifted towards a vile and bitter struggle. The rules of American Football allow for physical contact which isn’t always necessary in the context of the game but both the Broncos and the Dominators happily obliged by frequently setting up blind-side hits and unexpected downfield blocks. Considering the at times hostile atmosphere on the field, it is fitting to our beautiful sport that we can end the game with a handshake and say: “We’re still brothers, right?” – “Yes, we still are.”
